Carole Bowns – Buggy Whip
Carole Bowns – Buggy Whip

While raising a family, Carole started in the business world by selling graphic design. She then went into advertising and after 7 years as an ad agency owner, Carole had the opportunity to return to her first true love, hand-made art.

It was over 15 years ago, in the late 1980’s, that Carole collaborated, designed and created the first whimsical creature of the Buggy Whip line. Over the next decade, from its modest beginnings, Carole took the line and turned it into a highly successful business. The whimsical creatures of Buggy Whip Studio are now sold in shops and galleries both nationally and internationally.

The studio is located in an old historic farmhouse where Carole lives and works. Gamble McCown, Carole’s daughter, joined Buggy Whip Studio in the mid 90’s and has brought her own special talents to the line. Carole employs everyone from young aspiring artists to retirees in the studio. They are exposed to the pleasure and pressure of working in a vibrant home-based business. Each of her employees learns the business from the ground up, including quality control, cutting, shipping and packing. Although each intern is encouraged to add their own individual touches to their work, nothing leaves the studio without passing under Carole’s watchful eye.

The original paintings of each new creature designed by Carole and Gamble go to a local lithographer, where they are reproduced in a limited edition run. After returning to Buggy Whip, each print is mounted on wood and embellished with mixed media. The next important step, glazing with polymer, is then completed. Each piece is then cut on a scroll saw in the carriage house that overlooks the pasture and pond behind the studio. Finishing touches and final, careful attention are given to each item whether it is a keychain or an elaborate stool and table set.

The line from Buggy Whip Studio is an example of American craftsmanship; a perfect blend of artistic design and function.
